An explanation of the different types of art and series. Some of these series may not be on the Shop page. If you are interested in a style, let me know and I can give you some options for a commission.
Architectural Caricatures: The compositions are a combination of houses and buildings, often at sunset or twilight, but are not necessarily specific places. They are meant to evoke the color or feeling of that magic time and place that lives in your memory or your imagination.
Watercolor Architectural Caricatures:: These are highly visually textured watercolor images on board or watercolor paper. The colors are less intense than oil pastel, but darker than colored pencil. The images are intensely colored and playful.
Oil Pastel Architectural Caricatures in: Similar to the watercolors mentioned above, but the textures on the buildings are smoother. While they may lack the texture, puddling and spreading effects of a watercolor painting, the simple pigments in the soft crayons create more intense color, and these images jump off the wall and are more visible than watercolors.
Colored Pencil Architectural Caricatures: Beautifully detailed images, with professional quality colored pencils. Many clients prefer these images over the others. Colored pencils produce less intense color than some other media, and may not necessarily jump off the wall like the oil pastels do, however, they create a more contemplative. gentle, mellow image and is highly detailed. There are many subtle color and texture changes. Despite the image being more fragile than something in oil pastel or watercolor, the price is higher for a smaller work on these because of the extra time I spend creating and personalizing them. Unless otherwise stated, I use Faber Castell Polychromos, which are professional quality, lightfast pencils that are oil based rather than wax-based, which means that wax bloom shouldn’t be an issue. (Wax bloom is when drawings made with traditional colored pencils need to have wax rubbed off the surface of the drawing as it rises through the pigment, especially in warmer climates. It's fixable, but inconvenient).
Other Cool Stuff:
Rustic Signs: Simple images with flat and faded colors, in acrylic paint on wood. The texture of the wood may show through the paint, and sometimes the colors may fade over time, adding to their authenticity. These compositions, like the architectural caricatures in watercolor, aren’t necessarily any specific place, but rather combinations of scenes and memories.
Nostalgic Design, Retro Futurism, or Mid Century Modernism: These original paintings are cut paper lines glued into paper, then painted over with acrylics. They are characterized by strong lines and Googie signs, a lot of texture, brush strokes, and even bumpy paper. I also offer a fine art print in this series.
3D Houses and villages: Made out of old cardboard boxes, Popsicle sticks and other wood pieces, guitar strings, wire, and acrylic paint. I string fiesta lights through them and use them as mood lighting. Keep in mind that these are fragile and made from basic shipping material, so some of the paint may fade over time. You can customize yours, repaint them, or I can even send them unfinished and you and your family can enjoy painting the houses like my family and I do.
Made In Detroit Series: Not necessarily images of Detroit; I however, was made in Detroit. These are pen and ink drawings inspired by urban settings and my childhood memories. This is the type of drawing I used to love to do as a child. These are availible as downloadable coloring pages to my patrons.
Student Art: Drawings, coloring pages, Sketches, tips, special offers, etc. Much of this is work for my patreons that will be offered to or given away to subscribers as promotions. Click here for more information about subscribing to my coloring pages and becoming a patron!
