As I write this post in September 2021, New Orleans is currently recovering from yet another hurricane. The thing is, though, I know that this city will persist and come alive with musicians, artists and tourists soon, just as it has in the past.
Earlier this summer I spent some time drawing some of the historical shotgun houses that are one of the area’s trademarks. I spent time looking at actual examples and color schemes. Just like the city itself, these houses have endured through tough times but are still standing, with personality, weathermarks, and wear and tear that tell us a story.
I have been to New Orleans a couple of times, and there certainly is something magical about it: the people you see, the stories you hear, the music in the bars and on the street, food, the architecture, the Mighty Mississippi… Hopefully these drawings will inspire the viewer to feel the nostalgia, memories and hope I felt when creating this artwork. The ones I have finished so far are small, but I will have larger ones ready this fall. Let me know if you want me to create or reserve one for you!
