I finally bought some Polychromos. I hesitated because of the price tag, but I have found that they are totally worth the hype. What’s the big deal? Most colored pencils use wax, which can eventually rise to the surface of a drawing and look cloudy. In theory, this can just be wiped off, but it’s inconvenient if the work is framed, and unnerving to see a beautiful piece of art suddenly look different. Polychromos are oil based, so this isn’t a problem. Also, these particular pencils are lightfast, meaning the colors hold up over time and won’t fade quickly. I still recommend getting UV protection glass for any drawing, regardless of what media is used, if you can afford it.
I find these pencils to be much different from other colored pencils, even the professional (and expensive) ones I used before. You don’t need to apply much pressure, they layer well and you can even blend them and erase them to a certain extent. If you are serious about creating art that lasts a lifetime, I highly recommend them, they are worth the price.
